世界通用语——英语

英语是世界上传播最广的语言。 然而，拥有最多使用者的母语是汉语或称普通话。 英语“仅”是3.5亿人的母语。 可是，英语对其它语言的影响力非同一般。 自20世纪中叶以来，英语的重要性日益凸显。 这主要是由于美国发展成为世界超级强国的原因。 英语是许多国家教育体系中的第一外语。 各国际组织以英语作为官方语言。 英语也是许多国家的官方语言或通用语言。 然而英语的地位也有可能很快由其它语言代替。 英语属于西日耳曼语言。 因此它和同语支的德语关系密切。 英语自过去1000年以来发生了巨大变化。 早期的英语是一种屈折语。 而现代英语中大部分具有语法功能的结尾都已经消失了。 因此，英语在今天可以被划分在孤立语的范畴内。 这种语言类型与汉语的相似度要高于德语。 英语会在将来继续简化。 不规则动词很有可能会消失。 相较于其它印欧系语言，英语是简单的。 可是英语的拼写法很难。 因为拼写和读音的偏离度很大。 几个世纪以来英语的拼写法都一样。 但是读音却有了相当大的改变。 结果就是，人们今天仍写着同样的字，却说着像1400种语言的话。 英语里也有很多不规则读音。 光是字母组合 ough 的读音就有六种！ 自我测验一下！—— thorough, thought, through, rough, bough, cough .
